Allan was born and raised in Texas. Born in Port Arthur and spent most of his youth in Texas City graduating from Texas City High School in 1955. In between he lived for several years and started school in Beaumont. He also attended Kirwin High School in Galveston. After high school he joined the U.S. Army and spent 2½ years in Germany. Upon his return he soon married Barbara Rochner. He and Barbara have two children, Renee' and Marc, and 4 grandchildren. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2009. Allan graduated from the University of Houston in 1963 and completed a doctorate at Texas A&M in 1989. His early career was in manufacturing and banking and he currently is an Associate Professor of Management at St. Edward's University in Austin.
His mother told him when he was very young that he needed to learn how to cook because he would likely never find a woman who would put up with him. She never explained what she meant. Early in his married life most of his cooking was concerned with occasionally frying shrimp on Friday nights and preparing breakfast on the week-ends. Allan took over the full time cooking duty following heart bypass surgery in 1990. Having no professional training he learned through much trial and error and even learned to like foods that he once would not eat. He now cooks a wide variety of foods including, but not limited to meat and potatoes, Cajun, Italian, German, French and Chinese. His favorite meats are beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin, pot roasts, and veal. Allan has been an active member of the Men's Cooking Club of Wimberley since its very beginning and will tell you that it has been a great learning experience as well as a wonderful opportunity to share knowledge and ideas with a group of guys who share an interest in preparing and eating exceptionally good food.
Allan has participated as chef and host for a number of the dinners sponsored by the Wimberley Civic Club's Hobby Lobby/Spring event each year. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and is a 4th Degree Knight. In addition to gourmet cooking his interests include travelling, reading, and spending time with his wife Barbara and his grandchildren when he can.
